A LEAP INTO THE VOID

A Leap into the Void is a short film directed by Adrián Santana and Adrián Díaz Núñez, based on a screenplay written by Mary Frances Attías Antún and Eudys Cordero. It premiered in the Dominican Republic in May 2022 and stars Mayelyn Taveras, Natalie Borsos, Valentina Cordero, and José Manuel Rodríguez. The film is a production of Fundación TimeArt and Fundación Teatro Efusión Cristiana (Funteacris), Dominican Republic.
The short film “A Leap into the Void” explores one of the many facets of gender-based violence, known as “vicarious violence.” Through its dialogue, the screenplay reveals the circumstances that allow this form of violence to persist and continue to increase. No longer limited exclusively to violence against women, these situations often result in acts of homicide that affect more than one member of the family unit.
Synopsis
A 55-year-old man travels to the capital in search of his wife and only daughter, hoping to reconcile with them. When he finds his wife and discovers that she earns her living working in a cabaret and has no intention of returning to him, he is overwhelmed by jealousy. This realization awakens feelings of rage and despair, fueled by his belief that she belongs to him. Seeking revenge, he kidnaps the child and, after wandering aimlessly with her, unsure of what to do, ultimately takes his own life along with his daughter’s. In doing so, he puts an end to the anguish that consumes him and carries out what he believes to be his ultimate act of vengeance against the woman who left him.

Un Salto al Vacío es un cortometraje dirigido por Adrián Santana y Adrián Díaz Núñez, a partir de un guion escrito por Mary Frances Attías Antún y Eudys Cordero. Se estrenó en la República Dominicana en mayo de 2022 y cuenta con las actuaciones principales de Mayelyn Taveras, Natalie Borsos, Valentina Cordero y José Manuel Rodríguez. Es una producción de la Fundación TimeArt y la Fundación Teatro Efusión Cristiana (Funteacris), de la República Dominicana.
El cortometraje “Un Salto al Vacío” aborda una de las múltiples aristas de la violencia de género, conocida como “violencia vicaria”. A través de los diálogos del guion se revelan muchas de las situaciones que permiten que este tipo de violencia se perpetúe y continúe en aumento, dejando de ser un fenómeno exclusivo contra las mujeres y derivando, en muchos casos, en homicidios que afectan incluso a más de un miembro del núcleo familiar.
Sinopsis
Un hombre de 55 años viaja a la capital en busca de su esposa y de su única hija, con la esperanza de reconciliarse con ellas. Al encontrar a su mujer y descubrir que se gana la vida trabajando en un cabaret y que no desea regresar con él, el hombre es consumido por los celos. Esta situación despierta en él sentimientos de ira y desolación, al sentir que ella le pertenece. Como acto de venganza, secuestra a la niña y, tras deambular con ella sin saber qué hacer, termina suicidándose junto a su hija, poniendo fin a la angustia que lo devora y consumando así lo que concibe como su castigo definitivo contra la mujer que lo abandonó.
